Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program

Eligibility Requirements
  • Son, daughter, or spouse of a veteran who is permanently and totally disabled or died as a result of military service
  • Son or daughter between ages of 18 and 26 (some exceptions apply); marriage does not bar benefits
  • Be a degree-seeking student or have an undeclared major for not longer than two semesters. If you are pursuing other educational options such as certificates, endorsements, licensure programs, contact the VA for approval

Benefits
  • Up to 45 months of education benefits for eligible applicants
  • Eligibility determined by Veterans Affairs

How to Apply and Maintain Your Benefit – begin at least 12 weeks before classes start
  • Complete and submit the Federal Student Aid FAFSA, due March 10th of each year. Visit the FAFSA website for instructions and online forms
  • Complete and submit VA Form 22-5490(Application for Survivors' and Dependents’ Educational Assistance) from the Veterans Affairs web site.
  • Request your college to complete and submit VA Form 22-1999 (Enrollment Certification) and send all forms to the VA.
